Resource Use
Aquaculture practices have been documented to use less water, space, and energy to produce one pound of meat compared to the production of land-based animal protein. The most notable difference in resource use between farm raised seafood and other land-based proteins is feed conversion ratio. Feed conversion ratio (FCR) is the ratio between the pounds of feed needed to produce one pound of meat. For example, the image below compares the FCR of three popular farm-raised animals to that of farm-raised fish. Farm-raised fish have an FCR of 1.1 meaning it takes 1.1 lbs of feed to generate one pound of meat. On the opposite side of the spectrum is beef production, requiring 6.8 pounds of feed to produce one pound of meat. Another important source of its sustainability is aquaculture's relatively low greenhouse gas emissions during production.
